The first step in a game of poker is to place an ante. This is a small amount of money that each player puts into the pot before being dealt cards. Once everyone has placed their ante, the players are then dealt five cards. The cards are placed face down in front of each player, and a betting round follows. Players can choose to call, raise, or fold.

After the first betting phase, three more cards are revealed to the players in the center of the table. These cards are known as the flop and are community cards that can be used by all players to make their hands. Then a second betting round takes place. Then a fourth card is revealed, and another betting round occurs. The final card is revealed and a showdown ensues. The player with the best hand wins the pot.
